James Pittman Jernigan

JERNIGAN, J. Pittman, age 86, a lifelong resident Brooksville, FL passed from this life to his Eternal Home on February 12, 2013. Pittman graduated from Hernando High School and attended the University of Florida. Pittman was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and later was employed at Florida Rock and Hernando Concrete. He was a member of Eden Baptist Church for 75 years where he served as deacon and on the Eden Christian School Board, taught Sunday school and was a song leader for the choir. He was a family man, churchgoer and church leader and along with his wife Shirley, he volunteered with the Alachua Baptist Association. He dabbled in golf and hunting.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Mary Snow Jernigan and sister, Leona Jernigan Sellers. He is survived by his sweetheart and loving wife: Shirley Jones Jernigan; daughter and son-in-law: Gege Jernigan and James Gornto; sons and daughters-in-law: Charles Pittman and Mahalley Jernigan; James Roy and Terrie Jernigan; siblings: Charlotte Jernigan Hypes, Max Jernigan, Nell Jernigan Austin, Mallory Jernigan and Patricia Jernigan McQuaig. He is Poppa to 5 grandchildren: Jensie Gornto Chetelat and her husband, Steven; Amber Jernigan Cameron and her husband Eric; Ashley Jernigan Gomes and her husband, John; Justin Roy Jernigan and his wife Alicia; Kevin Allen Jernigan. He has 9 great grandchildren: Faithlyn, James and Carys Chetelat; Mackenzie Natale, Reagan and Noah Cameron; Johnny and Halley Gomes and Makenzie Jernigan and many loving nieces and nephews. He was a faithful husband, loving father and doting grandfather. His great-grandchildren have brought him much joy. Pittman lived every day of his life as a testimony to his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and would desire most to be remembered as a Christian in name and service.  A celebration of his life will take place at 11:00am, Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Eden Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Lake Lindsey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hernando- Pasco Hospice.
