We want to celebrate the life and spirit of Steven G. Lampert, who in his own words was "a seeker of higher consciousness, an animal lover and devotee of nature."
Born in Midwood Brooklyn, he moved to Canarsie in 1957, where his parents had purchased a house. he attended Yeshiva until 2nd Grade, then attended Local public schools in Canarsie. He attended Stuyvesant High School, Brooklyn College then his beloved Graduate School studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. There he studied European Cultural History, with his mentor, Dr. George Mosse. Steve's work at Madison had a lasting impact on his life.
Steve was also an accomplished and consummate athlete. His sports included fencing, (NYC Champion), cross country and downhill skiing, cycling, water sports yoga and a stint as a self proclaimed "Gym Rat".
Steve traveled extensively throughout Europe. He lived for sometime on a Kibbutz in Israel and in Germany, where he studied at the Goethe Institute, becoming fluent in German.
Steve spent many years as a successful headhunter, placing job candidates in Information Technology positions. In later years he became a Social Studies teacher in NYC Public Middle and High Schools. He was a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher who cared about his students and was always proud of the work they did together.
Steve will be remembered for his loving heart, generosity, integrity, wit, intelligence and wisdom. He had a great sense of humor with an endless supply of jokes, anecdotes and inspirational quotes. His great voice, his command of the English language and his theatrical flair, added a special quality to his storytelling.
He was a loving and romantic husband, a dedicated Father, Loving Son, Nephew and Great Friend! He loved his cats, cars, organic garden, winter sports, The Grateful Dead, his extensive music collection, The Wisconsin Badgers, boxing and of course bagels & lox.
Steve had an indomitable spirit and fought his way back from many serious health battles. He loved life and was always committed to creating a better one for himself, his wife and family.
He is so greatly missed but will never be forgotten. He was truly a gift.
It will be good to remember him at his "best", strutting around the beach at Fire Island on a bright sunny day with the Grateful Dead music in the air, telling his jokes and sharing vegetables from his wonderful garden. What a beautiful sight that was!
