A life of love and of service
Richard was born to parents who immigrated from Ireland and settled in White Plains, NY. He was the youngest of three children and during his childhood the family moved frequently, ending up in Schenectady.
Richard earned his BA from NYU and an MA in counseling/psychology from CUNY
He worked as a counselor in employment, in prisons and for the school system. He enjoyed working with at risk teens and was especially skillful in engaging their trust.
He retired from the Board of Education in 2001.
Richard met Nancy Lynch at Levy Shay’s, a “barefooting” dance place in 1982.
In 1986 they moved in together
In 1992 they married and bought a coop apartment at 100 Sterling Place, Park Slope.
They were compatible, comfortable and confident in their love
Richard enjoyed textures and experimenting with tastes, especially trying out new restaurants
He kept up with current events and loved to engage in political discussions
He loved theater, music, film, poetry, painting, including experimental arts and culture
Richard loved to travel and did so as much as his health permitted.
He loved his conversations with a multitude of family members and friends
Richard contributed generously to advocacy organizations, cultural & educational institutions as well as candidates committed to the search for a more humane society
He accepted a succession of serious health crises with courage and hope
Richard was kind, gentle, thoughtful, honest,
Loyal, appreciative, generous, engaging, analytical, charming,
Friendly, ethical, trustworthy, fair, temperate, smart, humble,
Patient, confident, aware, brave,
And attentive
Privileged to have known Richard and shared precious moments that we will always remember, we celebrate his time among us and his realization of a fulfilled life
