Pedro Velazquez of Howard Beach, New York, common - law Husband of Virginia Rios, passed away Sunday November 11, 2012 at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset New York. He was born in Santulce, Puerto Rico in 1944 and migrated to New York with his parents Pedro Velazquez, Rose Figuroa and his brothers Miguel and Luis Velazquez. As a youn man growing up in Brooklyn he had a great passion for sports, especially baseball where he played in Brooklyn and several other leagues. His love of Sports lead him to teach and coach his son Pete, nephew, nieces and also his granddaughters Nia and Nyella.
While serving in the army during the draft he still was given the opportunity to play baseball before being honorably discharged. He was married to Carmen Cuebas and they had two beautiful children Kathleen Carter and Pete Velazquez.
Pedro held various jobs that had certain sentiment to his heart, such as the love of his Island Puerto Rico, working at El Musue Del Barrio. He also worked as a teacher for the New York City Board of Education. He retired from HPD after training more than 5,000 New York City Superintendents. While at HPD he put together a non-for-profit organization with his best friend Jim Story. "La Coalicion De Portiva" Hispana Americana where they organized sports and soccer tournaments across the five boroughs. He was a great father going on vacation with his family. He was always a good listener and his daughter's best friend. He loved his granddaughters with all his heart and taught them the passion he had for baseball. He had a very close and special relationship with his son-in-law Anthony Carter. One thing that was remembered most of all was when the Carter family would move place to place Papa Velazquez was always there to unpack, decorate and design. He was sure to put up mirrors first to catch a glance of himself while working.
He is survived by his children, Kathleen Carter, Pete Velazquez, his grandchildren Nia and Nyella Carter, his son-in-law Anthony Carter. His common law wife Virginia Rios, his step-daughter Victoria Bermejo and his brothers Miguel and Luis Velazquez.
He will be greatly missed.
