Myrna was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She attended New Utrecht High School and was a graduate of Brooklyn College where she earned a Bachelor’s in Education and a Degree in Supervision and Administration. She began her teaching career in District 15 as a classroom teacher. Her success in the classroom was noted early on and she was encouraged to pursue a position in Administration. At a time when it was rare, she became one of the youngest female Assistant Principals in the city. It wasn’t long before she became Principal of PS 135 in District 18. She used her position to build a culture of excellence among students and staff alike. As a result, in 1991 she won the Reliance Award for Excellence in Education as an outstanding Principal in the City of New York. Along the way she encouraged and mentored many teachers who moved into positions of leadership carrying with them her culture of community involvement, compassion and achievement. After a career spanning forty years Myrna went on to teach as an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Divisions of Baruch and Touro Colleges. In addition to her professional career, Myrna was an avid traveler and a supporter of the arts. She treasured her subscription to the New York Philharmonic and was a lover of Opera and Ballet. Most of all Myrna loved people. She enjoyed throwing parties, dining out and spending time with her wonderful group of friends, some of whom have been with her for over seventy years. Myrna was especially devoted to her family and is survived by her sister, Lois Honig and brother Ronald Honig (Miriam Corbin Honig) and nephews Michael Krock (Jessica Wunder), Daniel Honig (Ozsel Beleli), Matt Honig and Nathan McCoy. Myrna made an impact that will not soon be forgotten and her joie de vivre will remain with us throughout the coming years.
