We are here to celebrate the life of devoted and loving husband, brother, uncle, and friend, Deon Rivers. Deon was born on June 10, 1986 to Fred and Willa Mae Rivers in Brooklyn, New York. He was the youngest of Fred and Willa Mae’s two children. Deon was educated in the New York City public school system, graduating from Edward R. Murrow High School, and was in the process of completing his college education. Deon married Kimberly Kerr on September 3, 2016.
Deon will be remembered for his devotion to family, and his warm, kind, and gregarious demeanor that affected everyone he met. Deon was born with spina bifida, a condition that impacted the nerves in his spine and left him paralyzed. Though medical treatments and assessments were a routine part of his life, Deon found elation among his family and friends. Fred and Willa Mae were adamant that Deon should live his life with the abilities that he had and, particularly his mother, ensured that he was treated fairly and supported. As a child, he loved musical instruments, trips to parks, and holiday family gatherings. Deon and his brother Patrick were inseparable. They roamed Kenilworth Place, played video games, watched movies, and listened to music together with their uncle/third brother Gregory.
Through adolescence, Deon developed a cool and calm personality, with a hint of his dad’s fierceness, and love of fashion. His main love, though, was Kimberly Kerr. They met in high school and were great friends. A few years later, they began a path to life partnership that culminated in their 2016 wedding. A marriage takes energy, time, and patience. Deon and Kim grew together as adults, providing comfort through hardships and cheerleading each other’s accomplishments. Their companionship should serve as a model to be remembered. Kim was by Deon’s side in his final days and ensured that he felt love and support.
On December 28, 2022, God decided to call Deon Rivers home. He leaves to mourn his wife, Kimberly; one brother, Patrick Rivers (Yevgeniya) of New Haven, Connecticut; four nieces, Madison Julien, Ava Julien, Naomi Rivers, and Dalia Rivers; and one nephew, Elijah Julien. He was preceded by his father, Fred Rivers, and his mother, Willa Mae Rivers. Deon leaves his love to a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends whom he cherished and enjoyed time with.
A visitation for Deon will be held Saturday, January 7, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Cusimano & Russo Funeral Home, 2005 West 6th St, Brooklyn, NY 11223.
