Dr. William "Bill" Michael Carleton, age 83, passed away on November 11, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. A former resident of Sudbury and now of Wayland, Massachusetts, Bill was a devoted son, loving husband and father, an adored grandfather, and an esteemed physician. He was compassionate, caring, and happiest being with family and friends. He made everyone around him laugh with his quick wit. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed summers on Cape Cod, driving fast cars, building model trains, traveling, and relaxing with his dogs.
Bill was born in Providence, RI, to the late Anne and Harry Carleton. He belonged to Yale University class of 1962, graduating Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Xi. In 1966, Bill earned his MD from Harvard Medical School. He completed his internship and first-year residency in internal medicine at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Bill then joined the Air Force, stationed in San Antonio as a captain for two years, conducting medical research for NASA’s Apollo program. Bill returned to Boston on a medical two-year fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, specializing in infectious diseases.
Bill was a founder of Southboro Medical Group that pioneered multi-specialty patient care. For thirty-five years, he was a cherished internist, mentor, leader and became a well-respected medical consultant. Bill developed incredible relationships with every one of his patients and colleagues. As a specialist in infectious diseases, He enjoyed privileges at MetroWest, Marlboro and the Leonard Morse Hospitals.
Bill was the cherished husband of Donna (Richmond) Carleton for 57 years; beloved father of Elizabeth Berk and Melissa Kranowitz; proud grandfather to Lauren and Jaclyn Berk and Asher and Noah Kranowitz; father-in-law to Lawrence Berk and David Kranowitz. Bill’s family is eternally grateful for the tender care that was given to him by the many caregivers from Affordable Home Care Solutions.
A memorial service will be held at Temple Shalom of Newton, 175 Temple Street, Newton at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 19th. The Shiva arrangements will be announced at the service.
