Stephen Nathanson, 79, of Brookline, died on February 10. 2023 after a long progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born in Port Chester, New York, to Harry & Ann Nathanson. He attended Swarthmore College before earning his doctorate in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University. At Swarthmore, he met Linda Smith, and they were married for 56 years, living primarily in Newton and Brookline.
He was a professor of philosophy at Northeastern University for 42 years, from 1972 until his retirement in 2014, and was the author of six books. He had a strong political conscience and was a co-founder in 2001 of Newton Dialogues on Peace and War. He was also a skilled musician, entertaining himself and others playing the banjo, recorder, trumpet, and piano.
Steve is survived by his wife Linda; his sister, Joan Spivak; his children Michael Nathanson and Sarah Price and their spouses, Alexis and Aaron; and his grandchildren Natalie and Chloe.
