July 29, 1940 - August 28, 2024
Sheldon Ganz, beloved father of 6 children, and grandfather to twice that number. Sheldon passed away peacefully at the age of 84 after a hard-fought battle with a recent ailment. His memory will live on as a blessing for his children, Jeff and Liz Ganz, of Arlington, MA; Dan Ganz, of Virginia; Matt and Kibibi Ganz, of Winchester, MA; Joanna Siegal, of Natick, MA, Matt Chiccaurelli, III, of Malden, MA, Mike Ganz, of Irvine, CA, and his ex-wife and friend, Gisele Ganz, of Framingham, MA. Sheldon’s long list of grandchildren include: Emma, Sam, and Maddy, Abigail, Harry, Juliana, Anthony, Sophia, Stephen, Eva, Vivienne, and Owen. Sheldon was the son of the late Louis and Pauline (Sidman) Ganz, and brother to the late David and Norman Ganz. He was uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Sheldon grew up in Chestnut Hill, MA. He went to Newton High School and was a graduate of New York University and Boston College Law School. Instead of taking a role in the family tire business, Gans Tire, he chose to follow his education and pursue a successful career as a trial attorney. One of his many notable accreditations was being duly admitted and qualified as an attorney and counselor of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1969. He always referred to himself as one of the “last dinosaurs,” being a sole practitioner practicing law on State and Congress Streets in downtown Boston until he eventually moved his office to Natick during his later years.
Sheldon was an avid softball player, competing well into his eighties. He was best known for running the bases on behalf of his teammates years younger than himself. He played on a number of travel teams that competed in tournaments across Cape Cod, Florida, and Binghamton, NY. He also coached and helped to organize many local tournaments in Cambridge, MA.
Sheldon had the epitome of a dry sense of humor and was loved and admired by many; from the large, extended families he was a part of, to the many clients and colleagues he touched during his 50+ year legal career; from his teammates and opponents on the softball diamond to the many “locals” around Framingham. His ability to maintain such long standing friendships over the years is a true testament to the man he was.
Memorial service will be held at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 1668 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA, Sunday, September 1, 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hebrew Senior Life (www.hebrewseniorlife.org) or EMASS Eastern Mass Senior MA Softball (EMASS Senior Softball, PO Box 5069, Wayland, Massachusetts 01778-4837).
