Richard was born in Worcester, MA on August 31, 1929. He and his brother Hank joined his father’s wholesale hardware business, Mendall Benjamin Co. in Worcester. After a 41 year career he began a long and enjoyable retirement in Brookline, MA.
Dick took special pride in his efforts to help Russian-Jewish and Vietnamese immigrants settle successfully in Worcester. He absolutely loved goofing around with his children and grandchildren. Dick was, above all else, a faithful Red Sox fan. He attended his first game at Fenway Park with his father in 1937 and passed down his love of the Red Sox to his grandchildren who he generously treated to many a game. One of his favorite moments was being at Fenway to witness the David Ortiz grand slam in the legendary ALCS game against Detroit in 2013.
Dick loved to sneak sweets and ask for “just a bite” of desserts that were on the plates of those around him. He traveled extensively and especially loved spending time in Israel. He was an accomplished golfer, loved to play the stock market and was a lively member of Temple Israel Boston.
