Philip Carl Stone Cowan, of Cambridge, MA, passed away peacefully at Care Dimensions Hospice House on October 30th, 2024, at the age of 77. Phil was a devoted father, grandfather, and brother who dedicated his life to the service of others in the mental health field.
He was born in Brockton, MA to parents Charna Cowan (nee Stone) and Spencer Cowan Sr, both deceased. Beloved father to Noah Cowan and devoted grandfather to Hugo Cowan-Nettles and Ruby Cowan-Nettles. He is survived by brothers Grant Cowan, Gary Cowan, Spencer Cowan, and George Nimitz.
Phil was educated at Belmont Hill School and studied at Columbia University where he received his master’s degree.
He valued knowledge and was known by friends and family as intelligent, wise, and supportive. He loved to travel and had been all over the world. His favorite destination was France where he traveled annually with his friend, Elizabeth (Libby) Sanderson. He was an incredibly skilled photographer and has left behind an abundance of photos of family, travel, and birds which his family will cherish. Of all the things he loved, family was the most important. He adored his grandchildren and often spoke of how proud he was of his son, Noah. He loved his brothers, friends, and extended family.
He is gone too soon and will be missed by many.
