Nina Abby (Andler) Weinstein, age 89, passed away peacefully July 19, 2024, surrounded by her family at her home in Newton, MA.
Nina was born in 1935 in Dorchester, MA to the late Frieda and Samuel Andler, founding president of Congregation Beth El in Newton. She is also predeceased by her brother Eric Andler. Nina is survived by her brothers Arnold (Barbara) Andler and Marc (Beth) Andler, sister Rita Andler, sons Glenn (Janet) Weinstein and Steven Weinstein, her chosen daughter Ven, and her grandchildren Robin, Gordon and Jodie. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Nina was a caring, compassionate, and loving person. She would do anything for anyone, and this was evident through the work she chose. She owned and taught at a nursery and kindergarten daycare center for many years and loved working with the children. For many years, Nina would gather boxes of food to donate to families for Thanksgiving. Her son Steve has fond memories of helping her put these boxes together, helping her carry boxes he could barely lift they were so full. She also worked for many charitable organizations to raise money for families in need. Her generosity was an integral part of her, and it was felt by anyone who was fortunate to meet her.
Nina’s primary love was her family. She was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. Nina loved to have fun and could often be found playing Mahjong or Bingo with her friends. Though she may not always have won, the time spent with those she loved was worth more than any victory. She was a strong and independent woman, and she passed these traits to her sons. She was known for her wisdom and always had great advice for anyone who needed it. Whatever was told to Nina in confidence was kept that way, making her a trusted confidant to many. She was blessed with the opportunity to care for her mother in her later years, ensuring Frieda had a long and happy life in her home, until her passing at age 103. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Nina was fortunate enough to be able to stay in her home with the help and love of Steve, Ven, Janet and Robin. Up until the end she kept her strong mind, evident to anyone who went up against her in gin rummy.
Nina took the role of matriarch in her family very seriously. She loved having her family around, and she took great joy in hosting all major events, from family birthdays to Jewish Holidays, at her home. At any occasion she hosted, there was always between 40 and 60 people enjoying her warmth and hospitality, for anyone else, this may have been daunting as they aged, but for Nina it was a true privilege and joy. Her family will remember her Friday night Shabbat dinners and Sunday good night dinners fondly. Nina’s passing leaves a noticeable hole in the fabric of her family, and she will be greatly missed.
A graveside service for Nina will be held Sunday, July 21, at 4pm at Beth El Cemetery, 776 Baker Street, West Roxbury, MA. The service will be livestreamed at this link: www.levinelive.com/weinstein
