Nelson G. Ross of Hingham, October 27, 2016, age 78, dearly loved husband for 52 years of Barbara (Fireman), adoring father of Carolyn D. Carpentier of Easton, and Douglas M. Ross and his wife Titi Nguyen of New York City; cherished grandfather of Nathan and Rachel Carpentier. Brother of Barry and Jane Rooks Ross, Rhoda Ross and Joseph Solomon; brother-in-law of Judith and Stephen Kaplan.
Retired partner of Ropes & Gray, joining the Boston law firm in 1967. He chaired the labor and employment law department, representing many hospitals and colleges in collective bargaining, including Partners Healthcare, Brigham and Women’s, Boston Medical Center, New England Medical Center, Harvard University, Northeastern University and Rhode Island Hospital. He began law practice with the National Labor Relations Board in Albany, NY. In 2001, he received the prestigious Cushing-Gavin Award of the Labor Guild of Boston for his career of exemplary problem solving and equitable approach.
A dedicated volunteer for the Town of Hingham, over 40 years on the Personnel Board and appointed committees; a trustee of the Hingham Public Library; trustee and past president of the South Shore Conservatory. Graduate of Boston University School of Management and Boston College Law School.
An accomplished photographer, he loved golf, opera, the Red Sox, Manomet beach, his family, every dear friend and colleague. Son of the late Moulton Ross and Miriam Ross Toabe, he grew up in Plymouth and Brockton.
Services at Congregation Sha’Aray Shalom, 1112 Main St., Hingham on Sunday, October 30 at 1:30pm. Burial in Sharon Memorial Park.
Memorial observance at his home Sunday after the burial until 9:00pm and Monday 1-4pm.
