Beloved husband of the late Anita (Shenberg). Devoted father of Andrew Levin & Jane Roth of Belmont, Charles & Joanne Levin of Rockport and James & Carole Levin of Wellesley. Cherished grandfather of Zachary & Rebecca, Alex & Rachel, Benjamin, Matthew & Nathaniel Levin. Dear brother of Janice Feffer of Dedham and the late Harry Levin and George Levin.
As a child, Mel attended the Edward Devotion School in Brookline where he made lifelong friends. Continuing his education at Boston Latin, Mel was a strong student, leading to his graduation from Harvard University in 1939 and Harvard Business School in 1941. In later years, Mel’s love of learning continued with extension courses at the Harvard Institute in Learning in Retirement.
Mel proudly joined the Navy served in the SeaBee battalion utilizing his business school experience as a Quartermaster. After the war, Mel returned to Boston and began to buy and sell surplus office equipment and furniture. This led to the formation of Business Equipment Corporation, which became the leading office supplier in Boston. With the growth of Boston industry, BEC grew serving the many large businesses.
Mel’s defining moment was marrying Anita, the love of his life. Devoted to her, they grew their family, traveled and shared an outdoor life of tennis and skiing. They enjoyed a very active social life with a network of cherished and loyal friends.
Upon selling his business, Mel retired to divide his time between Newton, Florida and Hull. He stayed active, physically, mentally and socially.
Services at the Levine Chapel, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline on Monday, August 13 at 11:00am. Interment at Beit Olam Cemetery, 61 Old Sudbury Road, Wayland. Memorial observance at his late residence on Monday following the interment and 7-9pm. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the Anita S. & Melvin L. Levin Book Fund for Judaica, Harvard College Library, 110 Widener Library, Harvard University, Cambridge, Cambridge, MA 02138.
