Martin Leonard Spivack M.D., Ph.D., was a man of intelligence and wisdom who was a pillar of support for his family, his friends, and his community. Loved and respected by all who knew him, he led a life of service as a veteran, a physician to our country’s veterans, and as an advocate for the brain injured. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, skiing, good food, gardening, dancing in the kitchen, and the deep and enduring love and friendship of his wife Marilyn Price Spivack. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the age of 94 in Milford, Massachusetts, on November 22nd, 2023. Marty is survived by his beloved wife Marilyn, his loving daughters Lisa Beth Price and Deborah Lee Price, and his son David William Spivack and his daughter in law Janis Nakano Spivack. Marty adored his grandchildren Arielle Spivack, and Samantha Rucki and her husband James Rucki, and his great grandchildren Emmett, Hunter, and Dylan Rucki. He is predeceased by his daughter Melissa Anne Spivack.
Marty was born in New York City on August 31, 1929, to Robert and Lillian Spivack. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1950, and his master's degree, medical doctorate, and Ph.D. from Boston University. He was commissioned as a lieutenant when he enlisted in the army in 1955, where he did microbiological research and treated patients at Walter Reed Hospital. After his military service, Marty served as the Chief of Infectious Diseases and the Director of Research at the Boston VA Hospital, where he was a beloved and respected teacher and mentor to new doctors, and where he developed the HIV/AIDs and infection control programs. Marty continued his service as co-founder and President of the Brain Injury Association of America with his wife Marilyn.
Marty will be missed, as he goes peacefully to his rest, his life work accomplished, his memory carried in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
Funeral services will be held at 1PM on Sunday, November 26th, 2023, at the Chapel at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon, MA. Shiva will be immediately following at the Clubhouse of Walden Woods, 1 Walden Way, Milford, MA., and on Monday November 27th from 12pm to 8pm at 11 Walden Way.
