I never had the good fortune to meet Marcos.  I have only heard of his extraordinary achievements and read the memories that attest to his extraordinary character.  But I still treasure the memories of his grandparents, Yanos z'l and Aggie z'l Flegmann, and the warm bonds re-kindled between our families after many decades and miles of separation.  Though many more years have passed since our last in-person visits, I hope that we may once again have the opportunity to pick up where we left off.  Till then, I wish Mauricio and Betty and the extended Flegmann family abundant consolations of  wonderful memories and the loving warmth of family, friends and community always.   Baruch dayan emet.

I met Marcos through work.  When he told me his age, I couldn't believe it. Not because of his professional accomplishments or his grandiose stature. But rather, he carried himself with a degree of confidence, maturity, and self-awareness that was seldom seen by someone at his stage in life. A mensch in the truest sense. 

When he became sick, this only increased. He didn't complain about his treatment or the severity of his symptoms. Instead he asked about my family and turned everyone of my concerned questions into a positive. 

We once had him at our house for a Jewish holiday and I'm thankful to have been able to spend time with him outside of a work setting. His family, who I've never met, should be incredibly proud to have raised such a strong and impressionable man. My sincerest condolences for your loss.  Baruch Dayan HaEmet.

At Babson, while walking around the college fair, a stranger threw a rugby ball at me that I caught instinctually. That stranger, Marcos, convinced me to come to practice the next day to learn the basics of rugby, a sport I had witnessed in movies but never played. In fact, as a child, I was never viewed as an athlete. In high school, I had bounced back and forth between football and soccer each fall, but I never earned a starting position. 

At practice, I realized I was even worse at rugby than I was at football or soccer. Despite the challenge, I was fascinated with the display of players supporting each other by working as a single unit to prosper in chaos and commit for the season that day. After a freshman season that included eight stitches on my eyebrow and countless hours of extra coaching from Marcos, I built some solid skills and temperament. The next year, I started coaching younger players, which also helped me develop as a leader. After earning the right to play at Babson, I left my team for a season to play in South Africa for the University of Cape Town. I was an outsider to both the team and the culture, but I repeated the process of building my own skills by teaching the plays and techniques that I had learned from Marcos. Although rugby is widely popular in South Africa, my teammates in Cape Town had not witnessed these plays and techniques, and we used them sporadically to surprise our opponents. Our success impressed the greater rugby community, and six months later Marcos recruited me to play with the Boston Thirteens for a season in the USA Rugby League.

I will always be grateful for my time with Marcos, a true friend and the gold standard of a team player. I feel incredibly lucky to have met Marcos.
