Lucas Joseph Sigurthur Warner, age 25 years, of Cambridge, passed away at Boston Children’s Hospital on Nov.17th, 2020 after a very long illness. His family, along with many loving nurses and doctors who cared for him for so long were by his side. Born in Glendale, Arizona, his life was short, but very full.
In spite of living with a rare, untreatable brain arteriovenous malformation, Lucas didn’t let anything stop him from doing what he loved. He met most of his lifelong friends at Cambridge Friends School and then graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School in the National Honor Society.
Athletics meant everything to Lucas. In a championship Little League game, his coach asked him to pitch and with his usual enthusiasm and determination, Lucas said “SURE”. Lucas pitched a no-hitter even though he had never pitched before. Lucas didn’t like to say no and whenever his friends asked him to join them, he always said yes, as long as health issues didn’t intervene. Soccer, baseball, basketball and football were his favorites. He followed statistics of his favorite players with enthusiastic knowledge.
The same determination and sense of adventure led him to attend American University in Washington, D.C., 2014-2018 majoring in economics. He loved it there and had many great friends. With an early roommate from AU, Lucas went to Iceland and they studied the banking crisis of 2008 while living with Elissa’s family. Many nights were spent exploring Reykjavik in the summer of nearly 24 hours of daylight.
Lucas discovered painting and printmaking after health issues in 2018 kept him from returning to AU. He loved his time in the studio associated with Mass College of Art and Design and sold his work at the annual MassArt Auction.
Lucas looked forward to every day he could work alongside his Uncle Steve at Oggi Gourmet in Harvard Square.
Above all else, Lucas loved his friends, family and dogs, Jake and Lucy. Spending time in Barnstable with everyone by his side were highlights we all cherished together, including mini-golf, riding the waves and stretching in the sand.
No words can describe how much he was loved by all who knew him. Our gentle giant lives in our hearts now.
Lucas is survived by his loving parents, Bill & Elissa Warner along with cherished extended family; aunts & uncles, Laura Edelstein & Steve Welch, Sarah & Gunnar Edelstein, Kat Kirby & Bill Meyer, Ginny & David Walter, Margret Bjornsdottir and Lisa Stewart; cousins, Elijah Welch & Cat Catabran, Jeffrey Edelstein & Tina Celic, Molly Kirby & Phil Robson, Jake & Hilary Levine, Alexis & Dylan Charbeneau, Bjorn Petursson and Bolli Thoroddsen. Lucas is predeceased by his grandparents Dr. Joseph & Gudrun Edelstein and Lynn & Lew Warner. He was loved and cherished by all his friends.
A graveside service was held on November 24, 2020 at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
