Judith C. (Rabinowitz) Tye, age 87 years, of Newton, formerly of Haverhill passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. Beloved wife of the late Allen M. Tye. Devoted mother of Ted & Kate Tye, Lynne Patkin & the late Louis Patkin, and Laura & Richard Barnett. Proud grandmother of Jessica (Tye) Zieky, Samantha Tye, Andrew Tye, Abigail Patkin, David Patkin, Adam Barnett and Matthew Barnett. Great grandmother of Isabelle Zieky. Fond sister of Lora Meyer and James Meyer. Devoted daughter of the late David & Minnie Rabinowitz. Dear friend of Bill Nathanson.
Judy graduated from Brookline High School in 1949, from Wheaton College in 1953 and from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Following her marriage to Allen Tye in 1955, she moved to Haverhill where her husband operated Allen Shoe Co. until his death in 1989. In addition to raising three children and extensive volunteer work, she was a young working mother at a time that few women were in the workforce. As an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education and department head at Northern Essex Community College, Judy taught and mentored several generations of teachers. She was honored multiple times for her teaching and community leadership activities.
Among her greatest pleasures were hosting family holiday dinners, getting together monthly with her Haverhill Investment Club and later in Newton her Saturday nights with “the girls”. Prior to her retirement, she moved to Newton to be closer to her children and became active in many area organizations, including as the long-time chair of her condominium board. Bill Nathanson became her partner in her later years and they enjoyed a special eight year relationship that took them to Florida each winter. Judy’s greatest pride was her family, and all will greatly miss her.
