Dr. Herbert L. Ruben

RUBEN, M.D., Herbert L., of Lexington on Thursday, January 12, 2023. For 65 years, he was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor “Ellie” J. (Fischel). Loving and devoted father of Bradley A. Roberts (née Ruben) & his wife Martha, Dr. Richard G. Ruben & his wife Karen, Carol S. Lewis & her husband Warren, and Laura J. Ruben Lewis & Dave Lewis. Adored Papa to Emma, William, Eli and Jenna, Mariah, Benjamin, Ryan, Lily and Daniel and great-grandfather of Jacobe. Cherished son of the late Max and Rose (Legonsky) Ruben.

A graduate of George Washington University ’48, Herb graduated first in his class at the Medical College of Virginia ’52. He attended Maury High School in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was raised with his older siblings, the late Daniel Ruben and the late Miriam “Mimi” (Ruben) Winer. He moved to Massachusetts to serve as Captain in the U.S. Army at Ft. Devens during which time he was introduced to and fell in love with Ellie. Dr. Ruben started his medical practice in Lexington and a few years later established the first pediatric practice, Burlington Pediatrics, in Burlington, Mass. where he enjoyed taking care of generations of children for over 60 years. In his later years, he loved going to the office daily to interact with staff and to see the children and grandchildren of former patients. He was an avid gardener, and when not at the office, he and Ellie were antiquing, traveling and boating on Lake Sunapee, N.H. He had a sweet tooth like no other for chocolate, and most of all, he enjoyed holiday meals with his family.

Services at Temple Isaiah, 55 Lincoln St., Lexington on Monday, January 16 at 10:00 am. Burial to follow at Westview Cemetery, 520 Bedford St., Lexington.

Shiva observed Tuesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
