Evelyn J. Baum, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother died from complications related to ovarian cancer on July 18, 2015. Evelyn was the daughter of Nettie Baum and the late Sidney Baum. Evelyn was born in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1968, and then earned a Masters Degree from Lesley College.
Evelyn was married to Kenneth Lipman, from New Bedford, for 44 years, and they moved to Fairhaven, MA together in 1971. She had many careers including working at the Southern Massachusetts University Women’s Center, volunteering at the New Bedford Women’s Center, owning the Bijou Theater in Fairhaven, and working in adult education with the New Bedford ESL program at Hillman Street where she loved working with co-workers and students from around the world. She was also a photographer and free lance writer. She loved her friends, traveling, gardening, biking, hiking, taking pictures, cooking, and eating well. She was also a member of the Sippican Chorus and the Greater Tiverton Community Chorus.
She is survived by her loving husband Kenneth Lipman, her daughter Jana Lipman, son-in-law Eli Feinstein, her mother Nettie Baum, her sister Carol Baum and brother-in-law Dick Ravin, her brother Richard Baum and his partner Joelle Deloison, her sister-in-law Judi Sterns and Bob Sterns, her brother-in-law Martin Lipman and Dr. Barbara Pearl, her sister-in-law Harriet Gottesman, many nieces and nephews, and her granddaughters Liza and Ruthie Feinstein.
There will be a brief memorial service on Wednesday, July 22nd at 4pm followed by a shiva from 5-7pm. The family will also be sitting shiva on Thursday, July 23rd from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. All events will be at the family home, 2 Phoenix Street, Fairhaven, MA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to her memory may be made to the New Bedford Women’s Center, the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts, the Millicent Library in Fairhaven, or a charity of one’s choice.
