Edna Ann Katz, age 85, of NewBridge on the Charles, Dedham, formerly of Keene, NH on Wednesday, November 2, 2016. Daughter of the late Benjamin Katz and Ida (Cohen) Payne. She was predeceased by her brother, George J Katz in 1987 and sister in law Nancy G Katz in 2008. Aunt of Jennifer K. Silver and George and Lisa Katz. Great Aunt of Nicole and Geoff Silver and Gillian and Greg Katz. Also survived by cousins. Edna was a former resident of Boston, New Ipswich, NH, and Keene, NH. She received her BA from Brandeis University in 1953, her Master of Science in Social Work from Simmons College in 1956, and her Doctorate of Education from Boston University in 1976, having received scholarships from both Brandeis University and Simmons College. Edna also received awards upon graduating from Choate and Brandeis, for contributing to the wellbeing of those communities.
Edna worked as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts. She studied and published in the field of Social Work. She served as an Associate Professor at several University graduate schools, teaching longest at Boston University and State University of New York at Stony Brook. She was the first social worker appointed by New Hampshire former Governor Sununu to the Board of Examiners of Psychologists to certify and license social workers. Edna was also a member of the Council on Social Work Education, as well as several geriatric and social work associations. In the 1970s, she helped to found and taught at the School of Social Welfare in the Allied Health Science Center at SUNY Stony Brook. In addition to her academic and career accomplishments, Dr. Katz studied water color painting with teachers in the Keene and Monadnock area of New Hampshire. She was known for her love of her beloved dogs and cats.
Graveside funeral services will take place at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon, MA on Monday, November 7 at 1:45pm. Shiva will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Monadnock Humane Society, 101 W Swanzey Rd, Swanzey, NH 03446 or a charity of your choice.
