Of Milton, passed away on Monday, September 9th, at the age of 93, after a long and full life lived on her own terms.
A free spirit with a passion for sailing, Dorry was born in The Bronx in April 1931. She moved with her family to Florida at age 7 where her father became active in land development. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Boston University’s Sargent College. While studying there she met her future husband Merton Minsky on a blind date, and they settled in Brockton after their Miami wedding in 1954. They were married for 57 years before his death in 2011.
Dorry had a great love of the outdoors and gardening in particular. After an initial career in education, she taught flower arranging at the Brockton Art Museum, studied landscape design at Harvard’s Radcliffe College, and later founded Dorry Designs, a landscape architecture consultancy in the Boston area. She joined her husband in 1986 at King Leather Products which he had founded in 1950 and together they created the “Kingsport” line of vegetable-tanned leather sandals and accessories they sold in upscale resorts and marinas.
Dorry is survived by her three children, Barb Minsky Porter, Jack Minsky and Steven Minsky, and ten grandchildren: Katie, Shira, Rachel, Nikki, Nina, Sam, Eve, Merton, Benjamin and Emily.
The funeral will be held in the Temple Israel section of Plymouth Rock Cemetery, 1000 Pearl Street, Brockton on Tuesday, September 17th at 11:30AM with a memorial reception to follow.
