EULOGY for Carol | By Kenneth Rosenberg
Carol touched many lives during her 79 years, and she was particularly proud to be the mother and grandmother to such wonderful children and grandchildren. Besides raising our two sons, I must also mention the many children and families Carol serviced during her 35-year career as a special education teacher with Infant and Preschool Developmental Services of Oswego County, NY.
Carol’s job and considerable expertise was in helping families cope with their developmentally delayed and/or medically at-risk infants and toddlers. Carol also trained staff in numerous community programs (such as Head Start and various day care sites around Oswego County, NY how to work with children in their care who had challenging behaviors and developmental delays. In addition to carrying out her professional responsibilities, Carol was also embedded in the local Oswego community, serving terms as vice president and eventually president of the Safe Haven Museum and Education Center at Oswego’s Fort Ontario. Many of the holocaust refugees, whose stories are commemorated in the museum, were like family to Carol. Even after retiring and moving to Sun City Hilton Head, for a while
Carol did some volunteer work advising staff of child care facilities in Bluffton and Hilton Head how to manage challenging behaviors of the children in their care. Eventually, however, Carol truly retired and dance became a favorite recreation. In 2020, Carol’s behavioral deficits became concerning, and after testing she was diagnosed with MCI - Mild Cognitive Impairment. As is so often the case, the MCI eventually progressed to an Alzheimer’s Disease diagnosis. By October, 2022 Carol’s decline had reached a point where she qualified for hospice care. Hospice Care of the Low Country made it possible for me to to keep Carol at home where I could keep her comfortable in familiar surroundings, and for that I am very grateful.
In January 2024, as Carol’s illness continued into year five, we lost our son Eric to a brain aneurysm just shy of his 53rd birthday. Carol, by that point in her cognitive decline, could not process that tragic loss. But perhaps that was a blessing because she did not experience the pain of losing our wonderful son Eric. Looking back over the almost 60 years we were together, over 57 years as man and wife, we had great times together with fulfilling careers, traveling all over the world, and enjoying the first 12 years of retirement in our new South Carolina home in relative good health. May our memories of the good times sustain us as we grieve.
