He was born in New York City on August 22, 1947, the third son of Elias and Beatrice (Shenkin) Bender. Growing up in Poughkeepsie, NY, he attended SUNY Albany for college, SUNY Downstate for medical school, and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester Medical Center Strong Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Bender’s private OB-GYN practice, affiliated with Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA, made him a beloved caretaker in the community. A resident of Acton since 1977, he retired from medicine in 2012 and turned his attention to woodworking and volunteering at Household Goods of Acton.
Carl married his college sweetheart, Barbara Isaacowitz, in 1969. In addition to Barbara, he is survived by their two daughters, Abby and Becca, by his brothers Mark and Paul, and his two grandchildren, Bram and Ziva.
His funeral will be held Friday, March 10 at 1pm at Congregation Beth Elohim, 133 Prospect Street, Acton, MA. Rabbi Emeritus Lewis Mintz will officiate. The funeral will be live streamed via zoom (password: Chesed2020).
The Benders will observe shiva at their home on Saturday, March 11, 7-9pm, and Sunday, March 12, 2-5pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carl’s honor can be made to Household Goods of Acton, MA.
