Tom was born in China on September 15, 1930. He moved to the United States at the age of 17. He started school and then, at the age of 22, he was drafted and served in the Army as an interrogator in the Korean War. Upon his honorary discharge, he finished high school and attended Tufts University in Massachusetts, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
Tom met his beloved wife, Joan, in Syracuse, NY. A group of people were going to play tennis…they were the only ones that showed up! They were married in Jamaica in 1960, the beginning of 64 years of marriage! Together they had two children: Michael and Vivian.
Tom began working at General Electric in 1959. He went to Syracuse University at night to complete his Masters in Electrical Engineering. His job transferred him to several states, New York, Florida, Kentucky and Wisconsin. He retired from GE in 1990. Shortly after retirement, he and Joan moved to Boynton Beach, Florida. They spent 23 years living the good life, enjoying the warm weather and golfing up to 7 days a week at times! During retirement, Tom and Joan took memorable vacations together including trips to China and Hawaii. They also took family cruises with each of their children and their families This included a Disney Cruise, a Caribbean cruise, and an Alaskan cruise.
In 2013, they moved to Pewaukee, WI to be closer to family. Together they have enjoyed wonderful friends and activities in their senior community, Kirkland Crossing. He was known to have played a mean game of Wii Bowling, bingo and pool.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan; his children Michael Liu and Vivian (Steve) Dethloff; grandchildren Courtney (Troy) Liu, Brittany Liu, Kyle (Abby) Dethloff, Kevin Dethloff, and Connor Dethloff. Also survived by grandpups Barkley, Marley and Goose and many relatives and friends.
A private family service will be held at Wisconsin Memorial in Brookfield, WI. on Saturday, February 1, 2025.
