Lydia Leonhardt, 84, of Scottsbluff, died Monday, May 3, 2004 at her home. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 6, 2004 at Community Bible Church in Bayard with Pastors Hod Boltjes and Tom Peyton officiating. Interment will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Friends may call at Bayard Memorial Chapel between 1:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday
Lydia was born April 4, 1920 in Lincoln, NE to John and Margaret (Feagler) Hessler. She moved with her family to a farm near Mitchell and she received her education in the Mitchell Schools. She married Fred Leonhardt April 4, 1937 in Harrisburg, NE. They began farming in Mitchell Valley in 1942 and later near Bayard in 1956. Lydia worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Scottsbluff and attended Western Nebraska Community College where she became a certified food service manager. She was head cook for the Bayard City Schools for over thirty years.
She and Fred were charter members of the Community Bible Church at Bayard where she served as secretary/treasurer for the Sunday School and Awana. She cooked at Camp Rock Youth Camp for many years and attended Scottsbluff and Bayard Christian Women after Five Clubs serving in various positions. She attended Friendship Bible Coffee Studies and was a member of the YMCA.
Lydia is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Gail and Bonnie Leonhardt of Omaha, NE, Grandchildren: Cassandra Metz of Denver, CO, Natalie and Mark Hogge of Folsom CA, Marc and Melissa Elder of Muddy, IL and Matthew Elder of Dover, Minnesota; five great grandchildren: Alexandra, Christian and Ethan Hogge of Folsom CA and Kayla and Kylie Elder of Muddy, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters: Pauline Heintz, Marie Blehm and Freida Herdt and brothers: John, Harry, Harlan Dean and Daniel Hessler.
