James Edward Baird, 71 of Bayard, Nebraska passed away Monday, January 14, 2013 at Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Bayard Cemetery with Ann Bairn, PMA officiating. Military honors by the Nebraska Army National Guard. Casual attire is requested. Memorials may be given to the Festival of Hope.
James was born on a farm near Lisco, Nebraska June 7, 1941 to Harry and Erma Baird. James was one of seven children. At an early age moved with his family near Broadwater. James was baptized and confirmed at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Broadwater. James graduated from Broadwater High School in 1959. After working on a ranch for a year, he joined the U.S. Army, serving 3 years and attaining the rank of SP5. After being honorably discharged, Jim met and married Sandra Loose, July 17, 1965 and to this union three children were born.
Jim drove truck over the road for over 35 years, but still had time to coach GO baseball and girls’ softball in Gering. He drove from Atlantic to the Pacific and Canada to Mexico.
In 1999, James had triple by-pass, so he got off the road. Working seasonal jobs with Co-op, Westco and Schiff partnership until ill health forced him into full retirement. Jim was a very proud father and grandfather. His grandchildren were his special love. He was very proud of their accomplishments in school and sports.
James is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sandy; sons Chris of Bayard and Steve (Lena) of Melbeta; daughter Jennifer and Mindy of Gering; grandchildren Jessica, Justin and Tyler; brother Clyde (Bobbie) of Gering; sisters Julie and Alma of Aurora, CO and Helen (Bob) of Chadron; very special aunt Marie Keenan of Bridgeport and numerous nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Henry and Roy.
