Donald “Don” Lee Maloney, CPA passed away peacefully on August 5, 2022, at the age of 87. He was born in Nashville, TN, on June 10, 1935, to Albert B. and Ethel Maloney. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sons, Donald “Donnie” Lee Maloney, Jr., and Alan Beckham Maloney and brother, Alvin Maloney (Mary Jo). He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Harriette King Maloney and two sons, David Maloney (Gayle) and Andy Maloney (Lee Ann); grandchildren, Anna Katherine Maloney (Luca Bonini), Matthew Maloney (Ruobing “Joyce” Zhang), and Parker Maloney; sister Judith Maloney, and many nieces and nephews.
Don was a Nashville native and a graduate of Battle Ground Academy (BGA) in the class of 1954. While at BGA, he won most valuable player in football despite playing both ways as a guard. In high school, he met the love of his life and his wife of 67 years Harriette King Maloney of Nashville, who attended West High School (’54). Following graduation, they were married on November 27, 1954, and enjoyed a not-so-warm honeymoon in Chicago – in November. He completed his certificate in accountancy at the University of Tennessee – Nashville.
Don began his career with Ernst & Ernst (now EY) in Nashville. He later worked at E&E clients The Alfred Hoffman Company and Murray Chair Company. In 1964, he opened his own practice that he operated for more than 50 years. While in practice, he was proud of training many accountants who went on to start their own practices and he served long-term Nashville companies including Drury’s and Lee’s Apothecary in Brentwood.
Don served as President of the Franklin Road Jaycees. He was a Shriner, a Mason, and a member of the Tennessee Society of CPAs. He played a key role in establishing the National Kidney Foundation of Middle Tennessee (now The Tennessee Kidney Foundation), where he later served as President. He served as a deacon for both Crievewood Baptist Church and ClearVew Baptist Church where he and Harriette were long-term members. As an accountant, he was often recruited to serve as treasurer and spent many Sundays “counting cash” following the worship service.
Some, including some members of his family, may have described Don as “frugal”, but he did enjoy his hobbies. He became a licensed private pilot and was instrument rated. He and his family enjoyed many trips around the country most often in a treasured Beechcraft Bonanza that the family shared with Larry Bishop (Sue), an American Airlines pilot. Don and Harriette also enjoyed boating and valued their long-term relationships at The Cedar Creek Club. Careful to only hold “one leisure asset at a time”, Don and Harriette moved on to RVing where they spent many years traveling the country and attending Tennessee Volunteer football games, often with his best friend and uncle, Buddy Wilkins and his wife Carolyn.
Through example, he taught his boys the values of hard work, professionalism, and integrity. Despite working long hours, especially during “tax season”, he didn’t miss an event of one of the boys. He lived as a model of how to be a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and son. Don enjoyed life and was eager to laugh. He was always quick to provide a quip sometimes to the chagrin of Harriette. Don was a Christian man who was generous with his time. He knew he couldn’t “take his money with him”. He often said that “Harriette was going to bring it” when she came.
As his mother said before him, Don would say, “God has been good to me, I have had a good life.”
