Dear family,
Yes, family. We eat, we sleep, we love, we hurt, and we help. We all want more than to merely exist-we wish to live life fully. Helping an ailing family member is most fulfilling when done in the spirit of service to the one you love.
Yet, the many collective acts that alleviate pain and anguish can make a positive difference for a patient. The arts are a potent part of that experience.
I know. My husband, Don Reed, a professional guitarist, provided service to many worldwide during his 50-plus-year career. When he had dementia, we discovered that performance and "road" stories always made a smile bloom on his face. His laughter became the music of the stories. When he listened to his favorite James Taylor tunes, it was the one time I saw the muscles in his face and body relax. For these few moments, Don would magically take away from the present. I will forever be grateful for the genuine relief provided and that he received through music.
Sincerely,
Lynn McGill
