Carl was born on January 23, 1935 in Kingston, Jamaica to Iris Campbell McFarlane and Victor Moore. Throughout his life, he expressed gratitude and spoke highly of his stepfather, Evan McFarlane, who raised him after marrying his mother. He attended trade school where he studied printing. After graduating, he secured a position in the printing department of Jamaica’s leading newspaper, The Daily Gleaner.
As members of what has come to be known as the Windrush generation, Carl followed his parents to London, England in the 1950’s for educational and work opportunities. As a lover of blues and jazz music, he found great pleasure exploring the colorful and gritty nightclubs of the London music scene of the 1950’s. It was in London that Carl rekindled a relationship with Vashti Germain Moore, who became his wife of almost 60 years.
Always looking for more opportunities, Carl and Vashti relocated to Greenwich, Connecticut in 1968. Having trained as a welder in England, Carl worked on many iconic buildings in his new home town such as the Greenwich Library and Greenwich Hospital. A man of the people, he enjoyed interacting with friends and forming life-long relationships with those within the community. He went on to found a community-based cricket club in Greenwich and was a founding member of the Connecticut Cricket League. He would later found a domino club in Lehigh Acres, Florida, shortly after moving there in 1999.
In addition to his community-centered engagements, he enjoyed sharing his love of music, engaging in political debates and watching sports, especially basketball, with his children, grandchildren, and friends.
Carl is survived by his four daughters: Colleen Walcott of Snellville, GA; Claudette Mills of White Plains, NY; Marcia (William) Wilson of Franklin, TN; Jacqueline Vassell of Birmingham, England, Sister Linette Townsend of St. Andrew, Jamaica, along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members and a multitude of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 2016, and his daughter Patricia Matthews.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Brentwood-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, 9010 Church Street East, Brentwood, TN.
