William Austin Maxwell Sr.

On Wednesday, October 11, 2023, William A. Maxwell Sr., age 87, of New Carrollton, Maryland passed on into eternal life. He was born on January 8, 1936, to Robert Maxwell and Ruth (Bell) Maxwell who both preceded him in death. Brother of Jay Maxwell (deceased). He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years Dora, his sister Barbara Barrett, daughter Katherine (John) Nalley, son William Jr. (fiancée Norma) and stepdaughter Tamera (Russ) Davies. Surviving are also seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Bill was an electrician by trade, working for IBEW Local 26 for 62 years, but was a jack of all trades. From building additions on his house, to a 2-car garage, he always said “Never say you cannot do something until you try”. He was a very compassionate person who was willing to help anyone at any time. Upon his retirement he kept himself busy assisting the neighbors with various home improvements.

A proud Navy veteran, Bill served for four years between the USS Forrestal and the USS Enterprise.

While Bill enjoyed watching Nascar, and the Washington Redskins (they will always be the Redskins to him), his favorite sport was bowling! He bowled for Local 26 for 58 years, making him the oldest and longest bowler on his team. He held the position of team captain for many years, and enjoyed participating in the annual bowling tournaments, as it allowed him and Dora to visit several states, and even travel to Canada. His experience and commitment to the game earned him the nickname “Coach”.

He enjoyed playing cards (Blackjack), board games (Parcheesi), shooting pool, turkey shoots, pitching horseshoes, fishing, boating, watching westerns and games shows (he won millions playing Wheel of Fortune from his favorite recliner!) and working crossword puzzles – he loved to keep his mind sharp. You could also listen to him play the drums – he could frequently be seen and heard playing to any beat on the kitchen table or any place to create a percussion sound. Decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas, became a passion. Neighbors and strangers would stop by to compliment him on his hard work and would even ask for permission to take pictures of their children alongside the scenery.

Viewing will be held Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 10am-12pm at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service. Graveside service will be held at Fort Lincoln Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the graveside service.
