Vernetta Edwards was born October 15, 1946 in Sumter, South Carolina. Her parents were the late Frank Hazel Richardson and the late Pearline (Lonon) Richardson. She received her education at Good Hope Elementary and Ebenezer High School in Dalzell, South Carolina. Her mother passed away at an early age at which time she would help out with her younger siblings. She was then blessed with her second mother, the late Rebecca McFadden Richardson through the marriage of her father. Vernetta would eventually leave South Carolina and followed other family and moved to Washington, DC. Later, she met Henry Edwards whom she married on June 1, 1968 and they were blessed to be together for more than 51 years. To this union their two children were born, Tracy and Bruce.
Vernetta had various jobs that included working as a short order cook, the cafeteria lines at the Senator’s office building, cleaning services and retail. But most importantly for the majority of her adult life she was a devoted fulltime homemaker to her husband and two children. Vernetta had many interests that included fixing up her home, decorating and arts and crafts, celebrating family occasions, birthdays and holidays. Two of her favorite days were New Year’s Eve and her wedding anniversary where she could be seen shaking a leg or enjoying the Cabaret. She was a huge fan of the Young and Restless and Bold and Beautiful and she spent many days talking to her sisters about their common interest of “gossiping and the soaps”. Vernetta also loved to keep in touch with her family and share stories of her childhood and to see what was the most up to date happening with all of their lives.
Vernetta entered into the presence of the Lord on Saturday August 10, 2019. Vernetta is predeceased by her father, two mothers, brothers Charles Henry McFadden, James Richardson and Randolph Richardson and sisters Ethel Lee Williams, Alethia (Bernice) Gilmore and Barbara Davis.
