Twana Carol Fortune-Jones entered this world on August 19, 1957 at the District of Columbia General Hospital in Washington D.C. She is number nine of eleven children born to Roberta Mae Brown and the late Francis H. Fortune, Sr., she also had 3 siblings from a previous marriage.
As a child, Twana was strong-willed, feisty and did things her own unique way, and these same personality traits manifested into her adulthood. She was educated in the D.C. Public School System and earned a G.E.D. She met John Jones at the young age of 12 and this became a “Love Story”, delayed but not denied, with them eventually getting married on February 14th, 1991. John was her best friend, soul-mate and loving husband for 29 years. Twana’s legacy lives on through her three children and the attributes that each of them shared with her: DeCarlo T. Fortune (her strength), Justin D. Fortune (her personality) and Jazmyn J.C. Jones (her spirit). Twana believed that family was the most important thing, next to God. She and John resided in Baltimore, MD and had been raising her grandson, Donovan Fortune and helping to care for her 95-year-old mother until her untimely death.
Twana had a strong work ethic and was passionate about working with under-privileged and under-served communities. Throughout her career she worked in various positions and made a positive impact on the lives of many individuals. One of the highlights of her career was during the time she worked for the District of Columbia Commission of Public Health under the Department of Human Services (currently Department of Health) as an Outreach Technician for the Maternity Outreach Mobile, better known as the MOM van. She worked tirelessly to help bring down the high infant mortality rate in the low income areas of the District of Columbia and used her personal experiences to relate to pregnant women and new mothers who were in need of nutrition, pre-natal and pediatric care. Twana was awarded the prestigious Theodore R. Hagans Jr. “Employee of the Year” Award in 1988 by the District of Columbia Government.
Twana was energetic, loved to travel, attend concerts, and try her luck at the casinos. Her family and friends will miss her fun loving spirit and infectious laugh. Twana always had a joke or words of encouragement to share with those around her and will truly be missed.
Twana went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 16, 2020 for a job well done, my good, humble and faithful servant. Her memory will be cherished by her devoted husband John J.C.
