Sarah Mae Smith was born May 5, 1935, to the late Haywood Smith and Retha Whitley Smith in Princeton, North Carolina. Sara attended and graduated from Richard B. Harrison High School in 1952. After completing high school, Sara was joined in holy matrimony with Edward Foye on May 9, 1953, and faithfully stood by his side for 63 years until his death.
Shortly after uniting, Edward and Sarah headed north and settled in the Washington, DC area as their new home. Soon thereafter, Sarah began working at the U.S. Soldiers Home, where she provided service for over thirty years, until her retirement.
Sarah enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing the slot machines, and most of all, doting on her grandson, Donte.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Ronnie Foye (Tonie) of Washington, D.C.; her daughter, Melinda Etheridge (Wendell) of Hughesville, Maryland; her grandson, Donte Etheridge of Hughesville, Maryland; her brothers, Cornell Smith of Selma, North Carolina, James Smith of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Larry Smith (Lavern) of Princeton, North Carolina; her sister, Linda Jones of Princeton, North Carolina; three brothers-in-law, Roy Lee Foye, Robert Lee Foye, and Rudy Lee Foye, all of Selma, North Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Alice F. Minter of Bowie, Maryland and Ophelia T. Armstrong of Greensboro, North Carolina; as well as a host of extended family, nieces, nephews, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Haywood and Retha Smith, her husband, Edward Foye, her daughter, Carol Foye; her brothers Hayward Smith, Jr., Linwood Smith, and Robert Smith; and her sisters, Annie Revels, Cynthia Williams, and Peggy Pannell.
