and Geneva Clark Baucom. She peacefully transitioned to external rest at 9:33am on
February 15, 2022.
Rosie was a young girl when the Baucom family relocated to Washington, DC. Rosie attended
Morgan Elementary School, Garnett Patterson Junior High School and graduated from Cardozo
Senior High School.
In May 1943, Rosie joined and remained a devoted member of Metropolitan Baptist Church until
her transition. She attended Sunday School and joined the Junior Choir under the Director of
the late Miss Drusilla G. Boddie. Later, she attended the Adult Sunday School and became a
member of the Star of Bethlehem Bible Class until the Congregation moved from the “R” Street,
NW location. Rosie was a Lay Minister in the Lay Minister Program with the responsibility of
answering the 24 hours hotline. She served as 1st Vice President of the Union Missionary
Society and was appointed President of the Union Missionary Society by Pastor Hicks for 2
years. In 1984 and 1985, Pastor Hicks awarded Rosie a plaque in appreciation for serving as
President. The Julia C. Gallaway Award (the highest award given by the Union Missionary
Society) was given to Rosie in 1989. For many years, Rose was also a member of the Pastor’s
Partners Ministry.
Rosie joined Naomi Chapter #9 order of the Eastern Star Prince Hall Affiliation in 1982. She
was the first to serve as Worthy Matron for 2 consecutive years (2001 and 2002). In 1980,
Rosie retired from the Department of Education with 32 years and 2 months of Federal
Government Service. During her tenure with the government, she received many outstanding
awards.
Rosie received her greatest enjoyment from praising the Lord and fellowshipping with her family.
When her grandchildren were in her presence, she would light up like a Christmas Tree! One of
Rosie’s proudest moments was hearing that her three grandchildren had all been baptized.
Despite falling ill, Rosie remained positive. When asked, “How are you doing?”, her response
would be a resounding , “GREAT!”. One of Rosie’s memorial reflections: “Believe life is good,
and it won’t let you down, When tempted to doubt it, to fret and to frown, Believe in the best
though it’s hidden from view, For this is the faith that will carry you through”.
In addition to her parents, Rosie was predeceased by her brothers, Howard Denslow (died in
early infancy), James Baucom and one sister, Mabel Dutch. Rosie leaves to mourn two sons:
George Powell III and Gregory Powell. Three grandchildren: Marisa, Philemon and Colin Powell;
one sister, Thelma Willingham, one brother, Herman Jr., and one sister-in-law, Bernice Baucom,
and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
