Michael, affectionately known as “Mike,” was born to Barbara and the late James “Pops” Belton on Sunday, July 14, 1957, in Washington, D.C. He was raised and educated in D.C; having received his high school diploma from Bell Vocational High School, a D.C. Public School. Upon graduation from Bell, Mike went on to work various jobs in the Washington, D.C. area. He became well-known around town for the high quality of work he provided: painting, landscaping, and hauling. Mike was dependable, fair, and honest and did not mind putting in a hard day’s work. He was light-hearted, charismatic and could brighten any room he entered with his laugh and sense of humor. Anyone he encountered soon became a friend and a lot of them later became family. It was while working at the Masonic Eastern Star Nursing Home that he met his fiancé, and they were inseparable from that day on.
Mike’s greatest passion was his family and he considered his greatest achievement to be his daughters. He had unconditional love for his grandchildren and played a major role in their lives and upbringing. The love he had for his parents was unmatched and that for his siblings was immeasurable. He treasured each of his nieces and nephews, all of whom he had special bonds with. Mike cared for and served, in some way, countless people throughout his lifetime and continues to serve as an organ donor. It is truly a blessing to have had him for the time we did.
Mike accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was a faithful member of Grace United Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Gary A. Davis, since September 12, 2004. He served as a Trustee of the church, a member of the Pastor’s Choir and the Men’s Chorus, where he served as past president. He could always be counted on to lend his talents to the church if and when needed. For several years, he also served as a member of the Church and Pastor’s Anniversary Committee. Mike’s infamous rendition of “I Got Jesus on My Mind” will forever be heard in the hearts of those who were blessed to witness it. He could frequently be found assisting with the upkeep of the church and as part of the hospitality committee whenever food was being prepared or served. In addition to his physical contributions, Mike was also looked up to by many of the members of Grace. He touched the hearts and lives of everyone, both young and old, from every station of the church and will be truly missed.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, James “Pops” Belton, and grandmothers, Edna “Granny” Harris and Helen “Granny Mama” Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory his fiancé, Marchell Thomas; his beloved daughters, Trina Montgomery and Michelle “Snuffy” Montgomery; his stepson, Craig Willis; grandchildren,Tevin Montgomery, Ciara Montgomery, Neiman Montgomery, Tyree Montgomery, Johnni Willis, Jaylen Carter, Destiny Willis, and Sydnee Montgomery; great-grandson, Blake Griffith; mother, Barbara Belton; sisters, Karen Huskey (Steve) and Kimberly Stoltzfus; brothers, Carlton Belton (Robin) and Jeffrey Belton; nieces, Carleta Belton, Nicole White (John), Chantá Cobb, and Myia Belton; nephews, Lenard Cobb and Carlton Belton (Mackenzie); and a host of other relatives, church family and friends.
Michael Wayne Belton is gone from earth but will forever live in our hearts.
