Harold Prather, peacefully passed away surrounded by scripture, her beloved
daughter, and her cherished granddaughter on June 6th, 2023. She was a
protective older sister to her late brother Harold ‘Buck’ Prather and an all-around
remarkable woman whose life was filled with love, faith, and a profound impact on
those around her.
From a young age, Mary held a deep appreciation for education and graduated
from Cardozo Senior High School with honors, while actively involved in various
clubs. She was a devoted wife to her high school sweetheart, the late Joseph
'Leroy' Turner, who together loved to go out dancing while always pouring their
hearts into nurturing their only daughter, Lynette James.
As a career woman, Mary spent the majority of her professional life at the
Washington Hospital Center. Leading critical care teams for 27 years, she left an
indelible mark on her colleagues and patients while meeting lifelong friends. Her
expertise, compassion, and dedication were evident throughout her career, and
she retired in 1997 with a legacy of excellence.
Mary's advocacy extended beyond her profession, as she actively built bonds
through community organizations. She served as the president of the local AARP
chapter, spearheaded initiatives with Hearts and Flowers and Ladies of Auxiliary,
and created Connie's Corner, a second-hand clothing store within the Washington
Center for the Aging.
Throughout her life, Mary found solace and purpose in her faith. As a decades-long
member of Turner Memorial AME Church, she became a renowned spirit within the
congregation. She led, hosted, and actively participated in choirs, women's groups,
and various community-led programs. Her endowment to her church family was
unwavering, and her influence will be felt for generations.
In her personal time, Mary passionately rooted for the Dallas Cowboys, enjoyed
watching her mid-day soap operas, was a competitive pokeno/bingo player, and
eagerly participated in evening TV gameshow marathons. She treasured her
conversations with friends around the world, sang her famous 'happy birthday song'
to all, and found immense joy in following the adventures of her only grandchild,
Asiah James, through their weekly Tuesday calls. Mary’s ultimate pleasure was the
late-night precious moments with her daughter, Lynette James, that were filled with
laughter, fun gossip, and sweet treats.
Mary's smile lit up the room, and her hugs melted hearts, making everyone feel
accepted. She will be greatly admired for her generosity and missed beyond
words. Mary Ellen Turner leaves behind a footprint of love, faith, and a selfless
commitment to her family and community.
