A Time to Plant
Lena grew up in Boyds, MD, a rural community in Montgomery County, MD. She attended Montgomery County public schools for her early education. Lena’s family relocated from Boyds, MD, to Washington, D.C. in 1955, where she completed her education and later graduated from Cardozo Senior High School.
A Time to Love
In 1960, Lena met the love of her life, Junius Johnson. They got married and settled on the 2200 block of 12th Street N.W., Washington, D.C., where they raised their four sons. She enjoyed spending time with her family and often invited her siblings over for a good time on the weekends. Lena loved music and enjoyed going to cabarets at the Masonic Temple and concerts at Constitution Hall. She also adored children, so much that Lena decided to attend the District of Columbia Teachers College to obtain her certification in Early Childhood Education. She volunteered at local schools before starting her career at Parent Child Center (PCC), now the Edward C. Mazique Parent Child Center, where she taught pre-school children for nearly thirty years. Lena was committed to her job serving the children in her community.
A Time to Give
Lena was the strength of her family. She loved unconditionally and always served others. Lena dutifully cared for her mother, Anna, her husband, Junius, and her brothers until they transitioned. She was a woman who took pride in her faith as a Christian and her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, relative, and friend. Lena accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior and was a faithful member of True Gospel Baptist Church in N.W. Washington, D.C. She worked faithfully in the church for many years until her health required more attention. She enjoyed being a member, and the President of the “Ever Ready” choir. For a period of time, Lena also served as the church treasurer. She was a member of the 2200 Block Club along with other neighbors. They helped organize the annual 12th Street Block party and lots of other community events for the neighborhood children.
A Time to Remember
Lena leaves to cherish her memory: her sons, Maurice Hebron, Richard Hebron, and Allen Johnson (LaShawn); her last sibling and dear sister, Mary C. Epps; four grandchildren, Paris Hebron, Michael Hebron, Jr., Marcus Hebron and Dayna Hudson; eleven great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Renee and LaShawn; special extended family, Casey and Bridgette; her nieces and nephews, The Epps family, The Bailey family, very special cousins, along with a host of loving friends and neighbors.
