Our beautiful mother Julia Ann Canty passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. Julia was born on August 16, 1950, to the late Annie McClinnahan and McKinley Thomas, in Red Spring, NC. Julia was educated in the DC public school system where she always did her best to succeed. She also enjoyed participating in school activities and interacting with classmates and friends.
Julia was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.
Julia worked for the U.S. Patent Office, and later enrolled into the University of the District of Columbia and earned her certificate of completion in Computer and Data Entry.
Julia worked for many years as an Executive Assistant in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Julia was an asset to the Department. She was professional and resourceful, a peaceful spirit who made a positive difference in assisting the Embassies, Constituents, and the public.
Julia also was a contractor and entrepreneur. She created a business managing and operating Housing developments in the District of Columbia.
Though she loved sewing, shopping, and cooking, Julia’s favorite role was being a grandparent. She treasured her time with her grandkids and loved being grandma, never failing to listen or give Godly advice.
Julia had a soft spot for her furry friends, Butch, Pebbles, and Jamie, treating each and every one like the valuable family members they are.
Julia was an active member of the church and consistently serving and visiting the nursing homes in Rock hill, S.C., devoting her time and energy to others.
Tommy and Julia were married on September 1, 1992. In 1985, they welcomed a daughter, Julia Canty.
Julia is predeceased by her parents Annie McClinnahan and McKinley Thomas. She is survived by her husband Mr. Tommy Canty, sons Anthony (Michelle), and Vernon (Nichelle), daughters Verna (Elliot), and Julia (Joevaugh), and brother Abu Shakur. Grandchildren include Asia, Maya, Jordon, Brianna, Kianna, Kazmere, Elliot Jr., Targiana, Janaya, Jaden, and Jaylen. Great-grandchildren include Elijah, Clay, Jenesis, Khloee and Kah'lani.
Stepsons James (Valarie) and Jeffrey, Stepdaughters Karen (John) and Sharon (Anthony). Sisters-in-law Sheila Blake (Mack), Essie (AL), and Fannie. Brothers-in-law Leroy and Waddell. And a host of cousins and devoted friends.
A funeral service is planned on July 10, 2024, at 10 am at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home & Cemetery at 3401 Bladensburg Rd, Brentwood, MD 20722. In addition to flowers and cards, please make any donations to the National Kidney Foundation, a charity that meant a lot to Julia.
