John Leonard Sullivan Sr., was born October 29, 1946 in Marksville, Louisiana. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Saint Paul Baptist Church in Marksville, Louisiana. He graduated from Mary McLeod Bethune High School in 1964 and was drafted into the Army but joined the Marines in 1965. After military basic training he was sent to Vietnam. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Marines in 1968.
John was a hard worker and was employed by Giant Food for over 30 years. He liked to hunt, fish, cook and barbeque. His favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys. John was known to his friends as John Blue and to his family as John L.
John started attending First United Methodist Church in Hyattsville, Maryland, with his wife, Alma, and grandson, Martin, around 2009.
After a long battle with illness, John passed away peacefully on January 14, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Buger and Lois Neco-Sullivan; brothers, Earl (Joe) Sullivan and Rodney Sullivan; sisters, Mary Jane Crezo, Agnes (Sara) Sullivan and Carol Crawford.
Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 47 years, Alma E. Jegels; son, John Leonard Sullivan, Jr.; grandsons, Martin John Sullivan and John Sullivan III; brothers, Robert and Michael Sullivan (Eloise) of Texas City, Texas; sisters, Bernadette Sullivan of LaMarque, Texas; Shelia Shaw (Eddie) of Bonaire, Georgia and Phyllis Buck (Albert) of Houston, Texas., and a host of family and friends. John will also be deeply missed by his long time, fellow veteran, and loyal friend, Mr. Preston Smith.
The family would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers. Special thanks to the medical staff at the Washington DC VA Medical Center and the Community Living Center.
