Jim was born on December 28, 1933, in Washington, DC to Alma and Claude Fletcher. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 67 years, Joann B. Fletcher, his children, Glenda L. Miller (Gene) and Robert J. Fetcher (Wendy). Grandchildren Audrey Kennedy, Steven Alberstadt, and James Fletcher. Great grandchildren Wylder and Cassandra.
Jim graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, in 1952. Following his graduation, he served two years in the Naval Air Reserve at the Anacostia Naval Base in Washington, DC.
Jim was a career Montgomery County, Maryland firefighter. He was dedicated to his profession and was a life member of the College Park Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as Chief from 1961 – 1967.
While in the Navy he developed an interest in aviation and a love of flying. He obtained his instrument and multi-engine ratings. He was an accomplished jack-of-all-trades helping everyone in his beloved town of University Park where he lived for 88 years and served as Town Councilman for two terms. His other interests included hunting and boating.
The family is planning a private graveside service at a later date.
