Mr. Gene Autry Young, Sr. of Washington, D.C., at the age of 80, passed away on June 5, 2022 at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was born to the late Mr. James Lee Young and Mrs. Albirtha Milton Young on March 25, 1942 in Washington, D.C. At an early age, Gene joined the First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church of Washington, D.C. He was educated in the District of Columbia Public School system in Washington, D.C., and attended Francis L. Cardozo High School. While a youth, Gene developed a love of sports, and played baseball and tennis, as well as bowling and swimming. He continued these passions throughout his life and taught his children to drive, swim, play tennis, and bowl. In his free time, he enjoyed collecting autographs of famous people and traveling to different states for vacations and bowling tournaments with his loved ones. He was a lifelong fan of the former ‘Washington Redskins’ NFL football team win or lose.
Gene worked for Miller & Long Construction, Turner Construction, and Jones & Washington Transportation as a Construction Worker. He was a Cab Driver for the Capital Cab Company and the Yellow Cab Company
for more than 40 years, before becoming ill.
Gene is preceded in death by his son, Gene Autry Young, Jr.; grandson, D'Quan Andre Young and his brother, Arthur Williams. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mrs. Phyllis Young; daughters, Catherine Young of Washington, D.C., Michelle Young of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Darren Antonio Minor, Khalia Michae Gans, Micah Khamil Gans; great grandchildren, Darren Antonio Minor, Jr., Kodi Dior
Wood-Minor, Jordan Denise Young, Zi’airre Antonio Minor, Dylann Andre Johnson, Kirsten Rita; brother, Jerome Ellis (Veronica) of Centreville, Virginia; sister, Loretta Cook of Fairfax, Virginia; niece,
Tonya Cook of Fairfax, Virginia; brothers-in-law, Jerome Young (Yvonne) of Walhalla, South Carolina, Clodie Young of Bowie, Maryland, James Young (Betty) of Seneca, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Ammie Thompson of Camp Springs, Maryland, and many nephews, cousins, and other family members and friends.
