Gary Lamont Baskin was born on December 25, 1955 to the late Willie Albert and Shirley Baskin. He grew up in Northeast Washington, D.C., at 133 U Street, along with his two brothers and one sister. He had a very close relationship with his late brother, Larry. Gary was educated in the District of Columbia Public Schools.
Gary worked as a handyman; painting, doing yard work, hauling junk, moving, or repairing whatever needed to be repaired. Work was always plentiful. Gary did a lot of work around the U Street neighborhood where he grew up; was there practically every day. You could often find him doing yard work or painting a house in the neighborhood, music blasting his favorite tunes. He would always take a break to have a friendly conversation with the neighbors passing by. Gary worked until recent health issues would not allow him to comfortably do so.
With an upbeat and humorous personality, Gary brought joy to the lives of many with his storytelling. He enjoyed sharing memories of his adventures over the years. If you knew Gary, I’m sure you have at least one memory of a story he’s shared with you. Family and friends were very important to Gary, and he always made himself available to help someone in need in any way he could. If you mentioned you needed something, no matter what it was, Gary seemed to have one available, was ready to get it for you, and would not take no for an answer. He didn’t have a lot, but he was always willing to share what he did have.
Gary loved dogs, was a Washington football team super fan, and a lover of music. When he was younger, he attended many concerts, and would somehow make his way backstage to meet the performers. Jimi Hendrix was his favorite artist. It was rare that you would see Gary without his “Walkman” blasting his tunes while he sang along. He loved the guitar and had a collection of guitars on display in his home.
Gary passed away at home in Adams Morgan on September 18, 2022. He leaves to cherish his memory: his sister, DeLyssia C. Janifer (James); brother, Willie Andre Baskin (Delores); daughter, Rahdia Green; two nieces, Alycia M. Janifer and Tarana D. Janifer; nephew, Andre R. Baskin (Limairy); great-niece, Jade A. Morris; great-nephew, Malachi Morris; one uncle, Samuel L. Williams; long-time friend, Patti Green, and a host of cousins and friends.
