Remembering mom a year later with much love 🌹❤️

“Beau Thlow”, that’s what my brothers and sisters calls her.   She was my dad’s niece!   Our families would get together quite often,  going to the local beaches during summers and the parents playing mahjong there.  My mom loved being with your mom, with long talks on the phone.  We so enjoyed it when she made the egg tarts and all the yummy pastries!  We’ll miss her!

The Family of Fung Chin

When thinking of a message, I thought of the epitaph of Christopher Wren (1632-1723), perhaps the greatest and most famous English architect, who designed St. Paul's Cathedral and many other noteworthy buildings in London.  There is even a building, that Wren designed, that still stands at the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia.  The portion of Wren's epitaph that I refer to states (English translated from Latin): "[I]f you seek his monument-look around you."

So it is with Mom.  If you seek her monument and legacy-look around you-look at her wonderful daughters, Nellie, Patty, and Sylvia; look at her grandchildren; look at her great grandchildren.  

She was delighted to spend time with the Great-Grandchildren! 

I learned the love of cooking from my mom.  I always wanted to help her make egg tarts, tea doys, pork dumplings and baos. I remember as a child whenever we went to a party she would always make egg tarts/desserts  to take. To this day I enjoy doing the same thing.  Thanks mom!

Mom loved to celebrate Chinese New Years and I remember when she used to cook all the yummy traditional chinese dishes  and we would wake up in the morning  all excited to get our hong baos 🧧 and to celebrate the new year! Love you always mom! You will be missed!♥️

My fondest memories are of the summers I spent with Popo as a child, along with my cousin Adam. I was excited to see her every morning and would go into her bedroom to wait for her to wake up. She would make me Horlicks for breakfast, braid my hair, help with math homework and cook amazing food for every meal. Sleepovers at her apartment were the ultimate fun because she let me stay up late and watch Chinese movies. She was a loving and fun grandmother, and I’m so blessed to have had 40 years with her.

What I learned from Mom is how to be a good hostess. Seriously, when we were kids and company came over, Mom went all out to make sure everyone enjoyed themselves and had plenty of good food to eat. I do almost the same thing, with less intensity but same idea. She was kind and cared about people. With love and fond memories. 😘

Mom was a great cook. She could duplicate any Chinese dish. Growing up we would want an  American dish for our birthdays  since we had Chinese every day. I would want fried chicken and mashed potatoes and she would make it.  She was a great seamstress too. She could sew or mend anything. Later in life she would knit and made all kinds of scarves, blankets, outfits to give away.
She lived a long good life. Rest In Peace Mom

Over our many years of friendship I enjoyed seeing Sylvia’s mom at all the yard sales (where her mom shared her food specialties) and at special occasions (see photo). I was also fortunate to receive some of her mom’s knitted scarves and hats.  She will be missed. Sincere sympathies to Sylvia and her family.

She was beloved and will be missed. I could never master saying "Happy New Year" in Toisanese, but I always tried, and she always pretended I was close enough. I am fortunate to have joined her family.
