Fred Melton, Jr., son of the late Fred Melton, Sr. and Alma Saunders Melton, was born on July 30, 1957 in Washington, D.C. and departed this life on November 10, 2022. He was the only son of four children. Fred was educated by the D.C. Public School System and upon graduating, continued his education at Bowie State University.
Fred entered the workforce as a young man, taking a printing job before working at Giant Food for several years. He would later discover an interest in law enforcement and pursued a career in procurement at the D.C. Department of Corrections, where we worked for over ten years. He continued his D.C. government service at D.C. Child and Family Services until he retired.
He met and married Sheree Easterly, with whom he had two children; a son, Marquel and a daughter, Brenden. He was also blessed with his first son, LeFranz and his last son, Zaidien. He was extremely proud of them all.
Fred often had few words and moved with a quiet confidence. He was a man of good style and charm who took great pride in his presentation and grooming. His clothes were pressed and outfits coordinated. He was so meticulous that he would gently roll his socks onto his feet to avoid pulling and stretching. His skin had to be moisturized and he kept jars of cocoa butter everywhere.
When he wasn’t doting on his baby girl, Fred enjoyed playing basketball, listening to music, and being outdoors. He loved his family and friends and was a pleasure to be around. Despite his quiet demeanor, he made up for it with his sense of humor. Quite the jokester, Fred had a nickname for everyone and would often be caught giving a sly look or playfully rolling his eyes when you got on his nerves.
Fred had many talents and further developed his passion and skill for barbering by obtaining his barber’s license. He would often barber in his spare time and cutting hair for his eldest sons became treasured bonding time. In keeping with his entrepreneurial spirit, he also ventured into carpet cleaning and loved providing this service for family and friends.
Fred leaves to cherish his memory four children, LeFranz Melton (Felicia), Marquel Melton, Brenden Melton, Zaidien Melton; three sisters, Alfreda Melton Williams, Bernodette Melton, Velma Melton Byrd; seven grandchildren; Makaila Freeman-Melton, DeAndre Fields, LeFranz Melton, Jr., Xylia Melton, Xyaire Melton, Xander Melton, Xola Melton; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
