Eugene Steven Dixon was born in Washington, DC on February 23, 1938 to the late Leola and Steven Dixon. He was the oldest of four children. Eugene peacefully departed this life on Friday, April 24, 2020 at Howard University Hospital.
Eugene graduated from Washington, D.C.’s Cardozo High School in 1956. He served one tour of duty in the United States Army that started in 1963 and rose to the rank of Specialist 4 or now known as a Corporal or E-4. Eugene enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a maintenance technician. His passion for his craft was evident in how he told stories about how he repaired Heating and Air Conditioning Units. Eugene’s expertise and work ethic quickly labeled him as the “Go To” Technician on all major work orders. Eugene was loved by all of the tenants at the apartment buildings he serviced throughout his illustrious career, receiving many tokens of appreciation and gifts up until retirement.
Always concerned with his health, Eugene often walked with his goddaughter Carolyn for several miles at a time. He would often talk about how he could walk farther than a lot of young people. Eugene also enjoyed attending parades and health and entertainment events.
Eugene would attend every family event and often sent holiday cards and gifts. He was also the unofficial family photographer and has a plethora of photographs from more than fifty years ago. He will always be one of the well-respected patriarchs of our family.
Eugene was always the life of the party and had a great sense of humor. He loved to laugh and tell jokes. Eugene never met a stranger and would make you feel like you have known him for years. He was always in good spirits and welcoming to all. He will be sorely missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Michael and Charles Dixon and sister Bertha Dixon Hall.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted niece LaVonda (Shaun) Johnson; great niece and nephew, Shauna and Jaden Johnson, all of Sumter, SC; a dedicated goddaughter, Carolyn Dunlap (Vincent) and a loving cousin, whom he loved as a sister, Ruby Jackson, both of Washington, DC; four nieces and a nephew, and a host of family and friends.
