David Anthony Benjamin was born on May 9, 1957, in Harlem, New York to Harold and Utah Benjamin. Growing up in New York City, David cultivated his love for basketball and his interest in Jazz music. In 1974, David and his family relocated to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, where he graduated in the class of 1975 from Charlotte Amalie High School. Upon graduating, David pursued a career in the Army and National Guard that would span over 20 years.
David relocated to Washington D.C. and in 1985, he met his beautiful wife. They were united in marriage in August of 1987. David was a husband and a father of two wonderful children. Once establishing his family, David built a career of 33 years in the Federal Government. Throughout his career, he exemplified leadership, through his ability to build lasting partnerships, exhibit strong communication skills, and cultivating an expansive professional network. David’s trustworthiness, empathetic demeanor, and sense of wisdom not only made him a diligent supervisor but a mentor, a confidant, and a friend.
David had many passions within his lifetime: he loved music, being physically active, and he loved God. David was a member of Faith Moravian Church of the Nation's Capital where he was a pillar within the church community. His dedication to Faith granted him many opportunities, including positions within youth fellowship, multiple boards, and the music ministry. It is in the church that David’s passion and boldness to explore his musical abilities grew. Over a span of years, David taught himself how to play the drums, and the alto, and tenor saxophone. Showing true dedication, discipline, and love for the craft, David became exceptionally well. Outside of the church, he was a member of various musical groups within genres of Calypso, Jazz, and R&B.
David was an extraordinary man, who shared his gifts of humor, and wisdom wherever he could. He provided for his family, gave back to his community, and was a shoulder of strength to those who needed him. He had a large presence but an even bigger heart. He will truly be missed.
David, we love you and miss you.
Rest in Peace.
