Christine Gloria Henderson was born on February 4, 1941 to William and Lucy Chatman in Rembert, South Carolina. Her family moved to Washington, D.C. on December 7, 1941. Christine was one of thirteen children. She was raised in a Christian household and re-dedicated herself to our Lord and Savior on March 24, 1987 at the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith.
Christine attended D.C. Public Schools and completed her high school diploma while attending night school at Cardozo High School. She was first employed by the U.S. Postal Service before moving onto the medical field. She worked as a physician’s assistant for Dr. Fred R. West, Jr. for over thirty years, before becoming the residential manager of the Westview Medical & Rehabilitation Services. Several of her siblings worked with her side-by-side. Christine had a passion for helping others, whenever and however she could. She would use all her resources and contacts to help many people she didn’t even know. She felt that service was her true purpose on this earth.
Though her purpose was service, Christine’s fondest passion was for her family. Married and divorced twice, to Arthur Henderson and James Jones, respectively. Christine had an unconditional love for her children, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, and that loved was returned just as fiercely. She spent a lot of time with her grandkids, giving in to their requests and trips to McDonalds. Her cooking was second to none, and you could taste the love in all the dishes she prepared. Furthermore, Christine was an avid reader, always starting the top of the day with the Washington Post and the accompanying TV Guide. She also frequently enjoyed watching action movies, the more action; the better.
Christine was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lucy Chatman, daughter Veleria Henderson, grandsons, William Obie Henderson and Walter “Bobby” Baylor, granddaughter Marisa Robinson, brothers Sap Reed, Hicks Chatman, Wilton Chatman, Thurman Chatman and Linwood “Peepsi” Chatman, sisters Hannah Williams, Elizabeth Dantzler, Mamie Williams and Joyce Melvin.
Christine is survived by sons, William “Rock” Henderson (Vanessa) and Bobby Frith (Chrissy), daughters Teresa Henderson, Elizabeth Henderson and June Ritchie, brother Joseph Chatman, sisters Ernestine Horn and Joan Talley (Lewis), grandchildren Freda Henderson, Marychristmas Henderson, Sierra Jackson, Chantel Featherson, Christina Henderson, Jeffrey Rorie, Sivert Ritchie, Christopher Henderson, Adarius Henderson, Leon Henderson and Adrian Henderson, sixteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
