Charles Edward Robinson was born in Atlanta, Georgia the second of four children to the late Nellie Jo Robinson on May 8, 1934. At the age of five, Charles was in a tragic fire accident where he was severely burned losing his arm and was hospitalized at Grady Memorial Hospital for two years. At the passing of his mother, at the age of six family members raised him. He was educated in Atlanta Public Schools and attended Carver Vocational High School where he studied culinary arts. He relocated to Washington, D.C. as a late teen and resided in the D.C. area until his death. On June 4, 1960, he married Olivia Tate and from that marriage was born three children. He worked several jobs before joining the Lustine organization where he was employed for 45 years. Charles retired in December 2020. He not only worked for the Lustine’s but they became family and Charles spent many years deejaying bar and bat mitzvahs.
Although, Charles had one arm there was no task too big for him (rode a bike, drove a manual car, built cars, home renovations, and much more). Charles loved music, cooking, and deejaying. In his love for music, he established several local bands that played throughout the DMV. He mentored many young people including singers and deejays. Charles enjoyed hosting events and for many years he had an annual Labor Day cookout where people came from miles away. Everyone knew when Mr. Robinson was having a cookout because music was heard throughout Ardmore. He loved music and had or have it in all forms from reel to reel, vinyl, 8 track, cassette tapes, CDs to digital downloads.
He leaves to cherish his memory: Olivia Robinson (wife); children: Vicki Robinson, Crystal Robinson-Coleman, Erryck Robinson, and Lashanda Jones; grandchildren: DaRell Alfred, Quentin Smothers, Erryck Sheppard, and Taylor Coleman; great-grandchildren: Naythen Sheppard-Heim, Gavin Smothers, Lyric Venable, and TaRelle Ainsworth; sisters: Christine Porter Robinson, and Lola Clark; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Clarence Richardson.
