He is survived by his son Robert, his wife Marlene, grandsons Brett and Mark of Mukilteo, WA, and son Donald and his wife Eileen of Fresno, CA. He shared 61 loving years with his wife Barbara until she passed away in February 2015. Both parents, Peter and Esther Anderson of Rapid City, SD are deceased. He leaves his sisters Anna and Mary, and their families, of Rapid City, SD. As well as brother James and family of Rapid City, SD; and his brother Carl of Dorol, MO.
John was born and raised in Rapid city, SD, near Mt. Rushmore in the Black Hills. He joined the Navy in 1951, and served his enlistment on the USS Bashaw (SS241) and the USS Remora (SS487). After military service, he attended the University of California at Berkeley where his completed his BA and MBA. He joined Standard Oil of California (Chevron USA) and worked in the financial group until retiring in the early 1990's after a engaging in a variety of analytical, supervisory and management assignments.
John and Barbara enjoyed many happy years of retirement, traveling the world, enjoying their home and garden, spending time with friends, family, and watching their grandsons grow to young men. Along the way, they volunteered in a number of activities such as tree planting, the local food bank, scouting and the Walnut Creek United Methodist Church. John was a member of the Oakland Durant Rockridge Masonic Lodge #188, Oakland Scottish Rite, Eastern Star, Mare Island Submarine Veterans Base, Theta Tau Fraternity, Beta Alpha Psi Fraternity, East Bay and Contra Costa Chapters of Chevron Retirees and Sons in Retirement Group #108.
John suffered renal failure during the last few years and was very appreciative of the care provided by Kaiser Permanente and Fresenius Dialysis of Brentwood. He passed away peacefully in the company of family and friends at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara. At his request, his ashes will be scattered at sea by the US Navy. We ask that those who knew John to remember him by doing an act of kindness for someone, and help make the world a better place for future generations.
